Why training records matter more than ever

From 2026, DVSA and Traffic Commissioners are scrutinising driver training records and employer accountability far more closely. It's not enough to say your drivers are experienced. You need to show what training they've received, when, and who attended.

"If it's not documented, DVSA assume it didn't happen." A signed attendance register is the evidence that a briefing took place — and the only thing standing between you and a Traffic Commissioner who asks why your drivers weren't trained on load security.

Traffic Commissioners have taken action against operators who couldn't produce evidence of driver training on basic topics — safe loading, fatigue, walk-round checks. Not because the training hadn't happened, but because there was no record that it did. In enforcement, undocumented is the same as undone.

What a good toolbox talk actually does

A toolbox talk is a structured, plain-English briefing on a single compliance topic. It's not a lecture. It runs for 20–30 minutes, covers the key points, gives drivers the chance to ask questions, and ends with a signed register. That's it.

Done regularly, they build a paper trail of competence. Done as a set, they cover the topics DVSA and Traffic Commissioners most commonly ask about when things go wrong.

The nine topics available

  • Tachograph & Drivers' Hours
  • Safe Loading
  • Daily Walk-Round Checks
  • Fatigue & Wellbeing
  • Drug & Alcohol
  • Reversing Safely
  • Speed Limits
  • Adverse Weather Driving
  • The Operator Licence — what it means for your drivers

Each talk is a complete PDF briefing pack — structured content, key points, discussion prompts, and space to record attendance. Delivered digitally, available immediately.
